Israelis Are Dying: It Must Be an Escalation by Jonathan Cook http://www.antiwar.com/orig/cook.php?articleid=9320
********************************************************************************************

Israel's purpose seems clear: to create an impression of a single implacable enemy, Islam, fighting a global war of terror in which plucky Israel is on the front line.

The aim of Israeli policymakers is not too difficult to divine either. They want their American paymaster dragged deeper into the mire of the Middle East as a junior partner rather than as an honest broker, giving Israel cover while it carves up yet more Palestinian land for annexation, puts further pressure on the Palestinians to leave their homeland, and destabilizes its regional enemies so that they are powerless to offer protest or resistance. Israel has been using its position to mistreat, humiliate and contribute to the poverty of its Palestinian neighbors in Gaza.

The time for the U.S. Congress to condemn these actions is long overdue.

US an enabler of Israel's blitz

HOW IRONIC that just two weeks after viewing fireworks celebrating our nation's freedom, we watch fires and smoke erasing the freedom (and lives) of the Lebanese. Ironic also is the fact that these fires are caused by weapons purchased by US taxpayers and provided to our ``friend," Israel, with the gift card, ``Use as you wish in the name of democracy."

As one who has family members caught in Lebanon, I wonder how the United States must appear to the world, when Israel, its strongest ally in the Middle East, is allowed to recklessly destroy Lebanon's infrastructure using American weapons and training without even a shred of guilt or displeasure shown by the Bush administration, let alone a public outcry. At best, we look too weak to question our untouchable ally.

Floral Park, L.I.: Mideast media coverage is ridiculously unfair and misleading. When 100 Arabs are killed, there's no mention that 80 were civilians and 50 were kids. However, three Israelis get killed and we know their names and ages. This has less to do with innocent Jews than with how innocent Muslims are portrayed.

The Mideast Fury, Without Letup

I cannot sleep at night because the noise from Israel’s shelling and bombing keeps me awake.

The “Hezbollah stronghold” that the media keep talking about happens to be a residential suburb where a friend of mine used to live.

I say “used to” because he had to evacuate his house, and his neighborhood is being bombed to rubble.

More than 100 Lebanese civilians have been killed in the last few days; many bridges have been destroyed; most of Beirut has no electricity at this writing; the airport has been bombed on two occasions; and the ports in Beirut, Jbeil and Tripoli were bombed on Saturday.

When David Brooks implies that Israel is not overreacting, he insults all of us who are stuck in our homes waiting for the bombing to stop and hoping that our neighborhood will not be among the next to be hit by Israeli strikes.

The roughly 1.2 million Arab citizens of Israel -- one-fifth of the population -- do not serve in the army, now engaged on the northern and southern borders. They have slim representation in parliament, and receive scant government support for the kind of bunkers and warning systems that have been well used in other northern Israeli cities since the fighting began.

The people here also have far fewer places to flee than the Jewish residents of northern Israel, thousands of whom are heading south to family and friends to wait out the war. For many of the 75,000 Arabs of this city, their only family is in Lebanon -- where, since the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, they have lived in refugee camps and cities that now may be under Israeli attack.

The greatest mistake Israel could make at the moment is to forget that Israel itself is a mistake. It is an honest mistake, a well-intentioned mistake, a mistake for which no one is culpable, but the idea of creating a nation of European Jews in an area of Arab Muslims (and some Christians) has produced a century of warfare and terrorism of the sort we are seeing now. Questionable Justice on Palestinians

I am curious as to how Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, has determined that a majority of the more than 9,000 Palestinians held in Israeli jails were "involved in terrorism" [letters, July 13].
Many of these prisoners are detained indefinitely without a trial. As such, how did Mr. Foxman determine their innocence or guilt?
Perhaps before Mr. Foxman lectures people about the "American values of democracy, moderation and reconciliation," he and the state of Israel should start practicing some of them.

But it needs to be said now, loudly: those who devise and carry out Israeli policies have made Israel into a monster, and it has come time for all of us -- all Israelis, all Jews who allow Israel to speak for them, all Americans who do nothing to end U.S. support for Israel and its murderous policies -- to recognize that we stain ourselves morally by continuing to sit by while Israel carries out its atrocities against the Palestinians. Peters and I also disagree in that I once took a military oath of enlistment to defend the U.S. Constitution, and only the U.S. Constitution. Peters apparently took a loyalty oath to both Israel and the United States. That's a mistake.

I am not pro-Israel or anti-Israel, not pro-Arab or anti-Arab. I have only one loyalty, one priority, and one polestar: the interests of the United States of America and the U.S. Constitution. That's why Peters and I often part company: he wants to sympathize with Israelis; I only want to argue the vital interests of the American people and no one else.

Now, why is Israel the worst terror state, rogue state and failed state in the Middle East? Let’s look at the evidence.
First, terrorism. The state of Israel was created by terrorists, who terrorized the United Nations into partitioning the Palestinian Mandate. The nation was conceived and born in terrorism. (OK, so was the United States, but then that's another story.) Since its founding, Israel has maintained a policy of relentless terrorism against the lawful inhabitants of Palestine.

The crisis in the Middle East is rapidly reaching dangerous proportions. Miami Herald Publishes Letter Criticising Ghitis's Taste in Arab Bloggers
. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/opinion/15041060.htm

Arab opinions

In her July 8 column, Arab blogs criticize Israel, Arab leaders, Frida Ghitis quotes several nonrepresentative Arab bloggers whom she considers ''progressive.'' SandMonkey, the darling of the Israeli blogosphere, blogs anonymously, as does Big Pharoah. Ghitis also provides no identities for those whose comments are buried deep inside the pages of Arabic newspapers that she cites.

She should explore some Arab bloggers whose identities are known and whose ideas do not mesh with neo-con ideology: Mona El-Farra, Laila El-Haddad, Mohammed Omar, As'ad AbuKhalil and Amal Amireh, for instance.

AbuKhalil consistently criticizes Arab governments, but not at the expense of the Palestinians. They provide much-needed information regarding the toll exacted upon the non-Jewish population over which Israel reigns. Israel's pullout from Gaza was merely to provide cover for its consolidation of its illegal occupation of the West Bank; Gazans have no control over their borders, air space or sea, just as Ghitis' mostly anonymous ''Arabs'' provide her cover for justification of war crimes. Wall Street Journal online Opinion Journal letter 7-14-2006
Israel is to Blame letter by Ted Sawicki - Chicago

It is unclear whether you are getting your operative handouts from Likud or Kadima these days. The daily murder by the IDF of Palestinians, of course, is not a provocation. After all they are only Muslims or Christians and hardly to be valued as humans, like Jews. The grinding theft of Palestinians lands, most recently in the Jordan Valley, is not a provocation because if it were Arab reaction would be retaliation and the WSJ knows that only Israelis retaliate. The calculated destruction of any viable economic activity by Palestinians by Israel is not a provocation because Arabs should be forced into abject poverty in order to prove that they are unworthy unlike the neighboring Jews who live far beyond their means thanks to American and German taxpayers.

The fact is that Israel is uninterested in peace. It would interfere with its ongoing decades old plan of genocide. The Arabs are not interested in peace because they consider themselves human and entitled to dignity and justice. There is no peace. There will be no peace. America should mind its own business. By arming one side it increases the atrocities that are committed. After all, no matter how many children Israel slaughters, and it does so daily, the bill is sent to the Americans.

The hundred billion or so of aid that the US has formally sent to Israel is small potatoes compared to the true cost of our blind support of Israeli criminality. Your own Holman Jenkins, no friend of the Arabs, stated a few years back that Israel had cost the American economy 1.7 trillion dollars. It is well over 2 trillion now. Next time you go to the gas pump remind yourself that at a minimum over a dollar per gallon is the price paid for the economic turmoil caused by continued everyday Israeli aggression, theft and murder. http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/responses.html?article_id=110008658

ALL I HAVE

A bottle of ink.

All I have
Is unshakeable faith
And an infinite love

Ismail Shamout (1930 – 2006) tribute by Haithem El-Zabri, July 4, 2006 http://www.palestineonlinestore.com/obituary.htm
Ismail Shammout was a refugee who lived the Palestinian experience fully, and went on to tell the story through art. Dispossession, exile, identity, suffering, perseverance, and struggle, are all predominant features of his brilliant oil paintings, and his remarkable way of advocating for his people's cause.

Shammout was born in 1930 in the Palestinian agricultural town of Lydda, son to a produce wholesale merchant. He remembered clearly how their world had turned upside down when they were driven out of their homes on July 12, 1948. The Israeli soldiers ordered them, at gunpoint, “Out! Out!” and the family of nine was instantly homeless.

The release of Kelani's CD comes at a particularly difficult time for the Palestinian people. Kelani says: "unless people listen to, and acknowledge, the Palestinian narrative in its own right, no peace treaty, accord or settlement will work. The Palestinian narrative has always been robbed of its independence and authenticity." Reem Kelani: Telling the Palestinian narrative through song Susannah Tarbush, The Electronic Intifada, 11 July 2006 http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article4959.shtml

The Right of Return A wide range of international legal instruments, including human rights law, humanitarian law, law of nationality, UN resolutions, bilateral and regional agreements, domestic law, as well as general legal principles considered to be binding recognize the right of refugees to return to their places of origin. Many of these same legal instruments also recognize the right to restitution of property. http://electronicintifada.net/bytopic/194.shtml

Letters
Don't buy into propaganda of political Zionists
Home News Tribune Online 07/13/06
Iapplaud you for publishing Nicholas Noor's excellent letter "U.N. intervention needed in Mideast." Political Zionism has gone a long way away from Balfour's Declaration of 1917.

To more fully understand what is going on with political Zionism let us take a serious glance at the establishment of Israel in 1948: "More than three-quarters of the Palestinian villages within the 1949 armistice lines were destroyed. In several of the districts wholly incorporated into Israel — Jaffa, Ramala, and Beersheba — no Palestinian village remained. From 1948 to the early 1950s, the amount of land owned and controlled by Arabs was reduced by more than 70 per cent. Even before the war's end, Israel was distributing refugee homes, possessions and properties to Jewish individuals and organizations for settling Jewish immigrants and to reward prominent Zionists and Jewish military officials." http://www.badil.org/Publications/Bulletins/Bulletin-17.htm

More than 80 percent of Gaza's population are in fact already Palestinian refugees pushed out of their homes and off their land in what we call Israel proper.

Israel's punitive economic and military siege of Gaza is quite simply more of the same intentional Israeli-made segregation and genocide that has been going on all along. It is a cruel fiasco made possible by many fools worldwide who buy into Zionist lies and propaganda about security and peace. Israel, racist Israel as the misnamed "Jewish State," the home-wrecking war machine of institutionalized bigotry and injustice has been wrong from the start. Palestine is right, and Palestine is in pain. I think it is time to put a stop to Israel period.
