A Problem That Can't Be Ignored

RE: A Problem That Can't Be Ignored

Dear Editor,

So true, unfortunately the concealed wish to just walk away from dealing with the Mid East conflict is everywhere- even in the peace camp. Wish it weren't so but it is. Far too many groups have been hijacked by those who simply wish to promote anti-American garbage in much the same way that our Congress has been hijacked by Aipac, thus veered away from actually upholding our own ideals about real democracy with full and equal rights for all.

However as a peace loving pro-American patriot who has yet to give up on working towards a better world for all our children, I very much disagree with your assessment that Hamas must "acknowledging Israel's existence as a sovereign nation" . The core problem is that Israel is political Zionism and political Zionism is an investment in institutionalized bigotry. Armed institutionalized bigotry and injustice to be more precise... And it really does not take the obvious drama of a bomb or a bulldozer for racist Israel to destroy a Palestinian home and family- all it takes is ignoring the very real pain and suffering and needs of a persecuted and impoverished population. We need to start noticing that Israel as "The Jewish State" has been quite adept at demonizing and dismissing real calls for real justice and peace.

True friends of Palestine need to remain wary of Zionist games.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

The most obvious obstacles to achieving Palestinian freedom are the decades-long oppressive Israeli occupation, poor leadership, institutional corruption, and inconsistent support from Arab states. But these have been compounded by what has slowly developed into an almost complete identification with Israel in the United States. This is largely the result of determined work over many decades by the Jewish-American community and its allies. They have debated each other, developed effective messaging, and engaged elected officials and the media.... Their actions do not constitute a conspiracy. They are the fruit of the effective deployment of lawful political means to achieve a very precise political end: that Americans identify with Israelis as "us" while considering Palestinians "them." Signs from avocados
http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2006/799/letters.htm 15 - 21 June 2006
Sir
-- Thank you for publishing Gabriela Becker's 'The essence of colonialism' ( Al-Ahram Weekly 8-14 June). There appears to me to be a fault-line in Israel's method, and it concerns an avocado. I am British (of Jewish origin) living in France. One day about three or four years ago I picked up an avocado in a French supermarket, saw that it was from Israel and put it back. Why? The reason was that the Israelis had just murdered an Armenian priest in Bethlehem -- shot in the back. My only thought was "not today -- no produce from Israel today." There did seem to be quite a few avocados remaining in the shop. Over the following months I noticed that avocados came from Mexico, South Africa, Kenya, all over the world, but not from Israel. Was the supermarket "anti- Semitic"? Hardly.

What Israel should fear is not a boycott -- it is that ordinary people simply do not want their produce out of a sense, not of political positions, but plain simple revulsion; and if one seeks to find a sure way of causing that revulsion it is the targeting of children and the innocent.

The Guardian

My heart goes out to a child of any nationality such as 10-year-old Huda who lost her family on the beach in Gaza (Israel blames Hamas for beach deaths, June 14). Ehud Olmert, Israel's prime minister, expressed sorrow while standing next to Tony Blair, but a denial of responsibility followed, and a claim that the family had been killed by a Palestinian mine.

Speaking from personal experience, after the shooting of our son, Tom, such claims following Israeli defence forces "investigations" lack credibility because of the inadequate and untruthful manner in which they are carried out, if they are carried out at all.

The IDF findings are at odds with the conclusions of an expert from the New York-based Human Rights Watch, who found that the "crater size, the shrapnel, the types of injuries, their location on the bodies" show "there is little doubt that they were killed by a shell dropping from the sky, not explosives under the sand".

Whatever the facts of this tragic incident, there needs to be a transparent investigation in which the truth is sought by all and the IDF is seen to cooperate inclusively in the process.

From the 1880s into the 1960s, a majority of American states enforced segregation through "Jim Crow" laws (so called after a black character in minstrel shows). It was evidently not enough for Lieberman that, as a Russian-speaking immigrant fresh off the plane, he was instantaneously granted rights and privileges denied to Palestinians born in the very country to which he had just moved (not to mention those expelled during the creation of Israel in 1948). The very presence of an indigenous non-Jewish population in Israel was, in effect, unacceptable to him. In 1999, he formed a party called Yisrael Beiteinu ("Israel our Home"), made up largely of other Russian immigrants for whom the presence of Palestinians is also unacceptable. Lieberman's party believes what all Israelis believe: that Israel is a Jewish state. Unlike the more respectable Israeli parties, however, Lieberman's party is willing to add that because Israel is a Jewish state, non-Jews are not welcome. Even if they were born there. RE: Israel is intent on provoking Palestinians to war By Sam Bahour June 16, 2006
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20060616/news_lz1e16bahour.html

Dear Editor,

I was utterly delighted to come across the excellent and very insightful column by Sam Bahour, Palestinian American ( and co-author of co-author of "Homeland: Oral Histories of Palestine and Palestinians (1994) .

What a relief to read a first hand sensible, uniquely Palestinian opinion in an American newspaper, as opposed to the syndicated canned Zionism one gets from the likes of the moronic Charles Krauthammer who is far too beguiled by Israeli lies and propaganda.

What I particularly liked about Bahour's column was his conclusion " If the United States continues to give unconditional support to Israel – in the form of the largest foreign aid package and official support for these acts of aggression against civilians – its image and interests in the region will continue to suffer."

I am convinced that for every one's sake, including our own, America should be investing in Palestine and peace, not racist Israeli laws, walls and war.

Sincerely,

RE: A Mideast road map
http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20060615-084010-9571r_page2.htm

Dear Editor,

Just as Zionists want their own "Jewish State" a sovereign nation complete with a very well armed military very busy defending the idea of the Jewish State by oppressing and even killing the native non-Jewish Palestinians, the KKK and its many mainstream American supporters once longed for an all white nation. So did Hitler. He sold his hate by promoting negative stereotypes of Jews, gypsies and other vulnerable minorities while at the same time glorifying Nazis. Lets not make the same mistake. We already learned this from history. We understand the words genocide and ethnic cleansing and how racist hate left unchecked just grows utterly monstrous and mean.

Now most of us really do know better. We realize that it is wrong to dismiss, oppress and/or destroy targeted ethnic and religious groups. We fought long and hard for religious freedoms and full and equal rights for ALL people- a more real democracy. So why do we want to fund the fusion of church and state abroad, continued apartheid and the corruption of every ideal we are supposed to hold dear by buying into Zionist lies about Israel !

Two states side by side is segregation and continued apartheid, with
generously subsidized Zionist immigrants and religious fanatics holding on to stolen Palestinian land, rights and resources, while the persecuted Palestinian refugees continue to suffer and starve in exile... all the while longing for home and a just and lasting peace.

A true light unto all nations can not be based on lies and a nuclear arsenal. Let Palestine return in full- with real freedom, dignity and democracy for all God's children.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

RE: How Clumsy, Inaccurate Gaza Rockets Could Start a War
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/16/world/middleeast/16mideast.html

Dear Editor,

Regarding "How Clumsy, Inaccurate Gaza Rockets Could Start a War" : your coverage of the situation in Palestine has soooo much Zionist spin it makes me dizzy. And that might just be the point after all: Confound and confuse, divide and conquer and destroy. Humanize all things Israeli while blithely dismissing the very real plight and pain- and oppression - of the Palestinians.

Would we interpret news about Palestinian pin prick rocket attack on Israel's Sderot in the same way if we knew the name Najd , District Of Gaza, and were more aware of Zionist terror and Operation Barak the summer of 1948 when the Arab village of Najd was destroyed: Najd's inhabitants were completely ethnically cleansed. Today there are more than 5 million Palestinian refugees still waiting for Israel to fully respect and honor U.N Resolution 194 from 1948, the Palestinian refugees inalienable right of return to live in peace.

But even barring that particular revelation, would we interpret news about
Palestinian pin prick rocket attacks on Israel's Sderot if we were fully aware that Israel's Sderot is in fact yet another generously subsidized Jews preferred place in Israel where Jewish children grow up learning to fuse religious studies with becoming "the strongest and most committed soldiers in the IDF" . http://www.sderot.org/template.php?title=About%20Us&cat=A

How well does that sit with our beliefs about real democracy with full and equal rights for all ?

Political Zionism started a war on the native non-Jewish Palestinians long ago- the sooner we take serious note of that the faster this whole conflict will gently dissolve into a just and lasting peace with world wide ramifications.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

RE: Stay the Course? What Course? By Eugene Robinson

letters@washpost.com

Dear Editor,

"Stay the Course? What Course?" ... that indeed is the right question ! Thank you Eugene Robinson for articulating exactly what has been troubling me all along concerning this war on and of terror.

Ewen MacAskill, diplomatic editor, writes in the Guardian that "George Bush's six years in office have so damaged the image of the US that people worldwide see Washington as a bigger threat to world peace than Tehran, according to a global poll." ( US seen as a bigger threat to peace than Iran, worldwide poll suggests http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,,1797771,00.html )

We need less Zionist advice and more diplomatic editors and writers willing to headline the folly of war in this modern age, and the self defeating nature of this particular one.

Compound our misguided continued invasion of Iraq with our myopic support of our "friend" & adviser Israel, the misnamed "Jewish State", and we really have undermined every ideal we are supposed to be fighting to protect: Real democracy with full and equal rights for ALL regardless of race or religion, .

Get to the heart of the matter- generously arming apartheid and pain in the Holy Land via political Zionism so that Zionist immigrants, religious fanatics, and war mongers can continue stealing Arab land and life translates into contributing to, not ending, a huge and escalating clash of civilizations.

Our real enemy is injustice: We should be investing in peace- and Palestine... a fully free Palestine.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

Dear Editor,

We seriously need to stop compromising the truth and negotiating away the Palestinians' true heritage & basic human rights as if that help establish a just and lasting peace for anyone !

We cover the politics of Palestine as if Palestine is actually as sovereign nation state. Palestine is a noble idea and a totally just cause- but the actual place is basically a series of disjointed and very much impoverished prison camps under total Israeli control- including a punitive economic stranglehold that started with the first displacement of the first Palestinian refugee. State sponsored terror imposing apartheid with forced transfer and segregation and out right Zionist theft of Palestinian land and rights simply can not shape a positive outcome for any one, despite the polished PR that dubs this two state insanity and a concrete wall of hate "security".

This mess started subtly when political Zionism tiptoed into the Holy Land and decided to invest in Jewish only privileges and pride. Zionist privileges and pride to be more precise. That attitude lead to a whole maze of home wrecking policies and Zionist terror that continues escalating to this day.

Dividing America from the truth of the situation imperils our own democracy and our ability to make wise investments, emotionally and financially. We can and should invest in a just and lasting peace- start with full respect for international law, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and U.N Resolution 194 from 1948, the Palestinian refugees inalienable right of return. One land- one people- one peace... and reparations.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

Disputed events on Gaza beach
http://www.guardian.co.uk/letters/story/0,,1797649,00.html
Thursday June 15, 2006
