Hard to build bridges

After reading the July 25 op-ed column by Andrew Doctoroff, Daniel Levy and Wendy Wagenheim ("At home, keep building bridges"), the first thing that came to my mind is how can our communities begin to build bridges if those bridges are not based on an honest dialogue to begin with? How can we build bridges if the partner we are to build bridges with fails to follow up their humane-sounding words with a humane stand?

While the Jewish community calls for harmony with the Muslim and Arab communities here, they openly claim their complete support of Israel -- which, to the Arab and Muslim communities, means they support Israel's collective punishment of the Palestinian and Lebanese people; Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories, Lebanon's Sheba farms and Syria's Golan Heights; Israel's imprisonment of more than 10,000 Arab prisoners, including women and children, most held without trial; Israel's apartheid wall; Israel's expansion of Jewish-only settlements in the Palestinian territories; and all of Israel's unilateral moves that have no consideration for the suffering and displacement of the native Palestinians.

If the Jewish community truly wants to build bridges, it can start by caring about justice for all the people of the Middle East and not just the Israelis.

I call that having your cake and eating it too. Pick one please, America with our Bill of Rights or racist Israel with its home wrecking bulldozers and bombs. Modern Israel has spent its entire history creating hate by creating and then tormenting and killing Palestinian (and now Lebanese) refugees.

If we sincerely want to be honest about the Middle East then we should be concentrating on the fact that American laws and ideals about real democracy, real freedom and justice for ALL are right- whereas our "friend" Israel is ALL wrong !

Obviously funding and empowering political Zionism is perfectly "legal"- even though it is a blatantly racist toxic ideology... but righteous indignation and resistance to the injustice of Israeli brutality is not "legal" in America's eyes ! This is crazy- and dangerous.

If our media was fair and balanced and honest about what our "friend" Israel really is and does, every American (including Jews) would be firmly applauding Hezbollah right now. Yes indeed the Jewish immigrant killing Arabs for "Israel", and pulverizing Arab homes for "Israel ": is a long tradition- more than 58 years and counting... to get to the heart of the conflict we seriously need to realize that political Zionism is simply and completely wrong..

And we need to embrace the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, taking special note of the Palestinians' inalienable right to resist oppression- plus the Palestinian refugees inalienable right to return. Thank you for publishing the news that 25 groups including the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee are urging the FBI to be careful as they pursue their Hezbollah probe... What a shame that the FBI- plus every loyal American citizen ( such as your letter writer Badruddin Khan ) is not putting some major energy into probing political Zionism and a foreign country's extensive propaganda campaign to demonize and destroy Palestinian resistance to the racist idea of Israel as "The Jewish State".

Like your letter writer Badruddin Khan - I too have noticed a definite Jewish push to stifle or at least distract debate so as to protect Israeli interests (and Zionist lies) rather than promoting American ideals and the truth.

The truth as I see it, with my own childhood shaped by MLK's inspiring dream of a more real democracy, is that the Palestinian refugees really do have every right to return : Free America- and Palestine !!!

Thank you for publishing Najad Tuffaha 's excellent letter concerning Israel- fully focused on Israel and more than 50 years of Israeli crimes... with no end in sight.

In a recent speech, Back to Roots by Salman Abu Sitta (http://www.al-awda.org/abusitta.html) , spoke about how he became a Palestinian refugee at the age of 10, "when strange European Zionist settlers invaded my country, destroyed my home".

Furthermore Abu Sitti points out that "Nine decades before George Bush came up with his campaign for democracy for the whole world, the Palestinians started their campaign for democracy."

Today Israeli violence continues to disrupt and destroy innocent and vulnerable Arab families and the Palestinian quest for real democracy with full and equal rights for all. Zionists claim that Palestinians are terrorists but an honest look at what is really going on clearly reveals that racist Israel has been the problem and the real terror all along.

Thank you Jess for your kind introduction. I have just landed after a 10 hour flight from London, crossing an 8 hour time zone. I had plenty of time to reflect on our situation.

Today, terrible news from Gaza and Lebanon, describing the death and destruction sown by Israel, gives us an eerie sense of dejas-vu. Al Nakba is re-enacted everyday of our lives.

Over half a century ago, it would have been inconceivable, that I, a Palestinian boy living peacefully in his home thousands of miles away, would be speaking to you here today, nor that many of you, third generation refugees from Palestine, would be here in such numbers, away from the homes of your fathers and grandfathers. But such is the working of al Nakba

I became a refugee at the age of 10, when strange European Zionist settlers invaded my country, destroyed my home and made me a refugee. I spent all my adult life wondering why this enemy destroyed my life. I tried to put a face to this invisible enemy – for I have never seen one before. Like millions of Palestinians, I started, then in 1948, on the long trek to return home, The trajectory of expulsion propelled us to the four corners of the earth but our compass was always directed towards our home. In unison and in unbelievable resilience, we vowed: We shall never rest until we return home.

This is the ninetieth year in our struggle for freedom and peaceful life in our homeland. In 1916, two European colonial diplomats, the British Mark Sykes and the French Georges Picot conspired to enslave the Arab people after winning the war in alliance with the Arabs against the Ottoman rule. While the Allies’ planes were dropping leaflets expressing devotion to the Arab quest for freedom and democracy, Sykes and Picot charted on a map lines dividing of the territorial spoils of war.

A latent European colonial enterprise came into the fray. The Zionist leader, Weizmann extracted a fateful letter from the British Foreign Secretary, Lord Balfour, in November 1917 addressed to a Jewish millionaire, Lord Rothschild. None of the three conspiring Europeans lived in Palestine or had a legitimate presence in Palestine. The British army then had barely crossed the border of Palestine.

Balfour declaration was a false promise of those who did not own to those who had no title behind the back of the rightful owner. Thus began a relentless Western war against the Palestinian people, now in its ninetieth year.
