Arab-baiting a nation-wide phenomenon
Why is the "Detroit Jewish News" attacking Arab community leaders?

Pro-Israeli Jewish groups have always targeted public officials and candidates whose views on Israel don't mimic their own. Now, across the country, those same organizations are attacking Arab Americans and American Muslims who have high public profiles, presumably because they are finally making a difference in American political discourse on the Middle East.

It's a critical issue in Michigan’s gubernatorial race, as the "Detroit Jewish News" (DJN) has chosen to attack influential Arab Americans here who have the ability to sway the votes of tens of thousands of Arab Americans in the state with the largest Arab American population.

The stakes are high. For the first time since the 1994 Republican landslide, Democrats are poised to attain a majority of the nation's governorships, an important political toehold regardless of who wins the battle to control Congress.

Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa, all states that could prove vital in the 2008 presidential campaign, are toss-ups, analysts say. Michigan's woeful economy has made Democratic Governor Jennifer Granholm, once hailed as a rising national star, highly vulnerable. Her challenger, Republican and Amway billionaire Dick DeVos, has been sharply criticizing her on the TV airwaves since February. People do want change, but in the two candidate debates held so far - though not many watched the second because of the Tigers’ game - Granholm appeared the winner. She is a trained actress and that both helps and hurts her. She puts on a good show, but is it real? DeVos, on the other hand, comes across as more sincere than Granholm, and more bumbling and less informed than her as well.

As if the battle they each face isn't tough enough, the DJN took DeVos to task for seeking to appear at a dinner event organized by the Arab American Political Action Committee (AAPAC) in mid-September. To bolster its claim that DeVos should not attend what could have been a very important opportunity for him, the DJN launched a scathing attack on Osama Siblani and Abed Hammoud, founders and members of the Arab American Political Action Committee (AAPAC). (Siblani is also the publisher of this newspaper.) In highly inflammatory and often inaccurate columns by the DJN's editor and others, anti-war protests held in Dearborn and Detroit during the massive Israeli attack on Lebanon last summer were described as pro-Hizbullah rallies. The Congress of Arab American Organizations (CAAO), headed by Hammoud, is a coalition of 43 Arab American groups. It was accused of sponsoring the "Hizbullah" rallies. Siblani and Hammoud were also accused of supporting Hizbullah and denigrating the Holocaust during that period.

When accosted by the DJN with these false accusations, the DeVos campaign, flustered, frightened and ill-informed, backed out of the dinner appearance. The candidate himself, at his own request, later met privately with community members, including Siblani and Hammoud, and apologized.

Both candidates should be aware that this Arab-baiting going on in Michigan is a national phenomenon that indisputably has more to do with pro-Israel groups wanting to control the political discussion on the Middle East than with any credibility issues of those whom they are attacking. (See inset next page for details.)

Predictably, the DJN chose two of the most respected members of the Arab American community to attack. Not because they are respected, but because they are credible, effective and principled.

Siblani came to this country in 1976 from Lebanon, earned his B.S. in electrical engineering and after working in that field for a few years as vice president of an import-export company, single-handedly launched an independent bilingual newspaper for the Arab American community. He is an American citizen. This newspaper and Siblani have served the community for 22 years and are established as the best source in America and internationally for informed comment and analysis on the Arab perspective on Middle East matters. It obviously disturbs pro-Israel American Jews in Michigan and nationally that the Arab American community can effectively voice a viewpoint opposing their own.

Abed Hammoud was educated in Beirut, in Europe and finally in the United States. He is the first person I - a non-Arab - would go to for advice on almost anything. He is a lead prosecutor in the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. His wife is a Vice President at a national bank chain. They have two children, born in Michigan. They work tirelessly to imbue them with the American work ethic and the rule of law.

These two men, with the help of many others who believed in their leadership and in the Arab American community, launched AAPAC in 1998 to facilitate Arab American participation in the American electoral process more fully. The community's participation until then had been limited to individual efforts and in many instances similar to that in the Middle East - support based on cronyism and favoritism with little accomplished for the Arab American community as a whole. Since then, the Arab American community has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Michigan's elected and public officials, cultivated on the basis of mutual respect and understanding. Much dialogue has occurred.

After 9/11, the federal government and pro-Israel groups took advantage of the anti-Arab political climate to place restraints on Arab American activities. In exchange for funding and for not being attacked, many prominent local Arab American community organizations now function under the oversight of the pro-Israel Jewish community in Metro Detroit, which works to veto activities which displease them politically. The technique has worked well with most of these organizations, effectively silencing all political activity. But the community at large knows that "The Arab American News" and AAPAC are not party to this agreement and never would be. Thus, the DJN finally had to be utilized in an attempt to discredit the publisher of the Michigan Arab American community’s newspaper of record and its most established, high profile political action committee.

Unfortunately, that has compromised the integrity of that paper. The DJN has run stories that are inaccurate and misleading. No opportunity has been offered to those whom it attacks to respond to the allegations that have been leveled against them.

So let's set the record straight. The public at large and those public officials who have been misled by the DJN can rest assured that the Arab American community doesn't support terrorism. This community has a very clear, firm position on the subject of terrorism. It always has and will continue to condemn in the strongest terms all terrorism, whether it's sponsored by individuals, groups or states. The community suffers twice from Middle Eastern-sponsored terrorism, first as Americans, and then by ethnic and/or religious association with the terrorists, and all the backlash and loss of civil rights that that association incurs.

The entire community strongly condemned the attack on our nation on September 11, 2001. That is reiterated every year on the anniversary of that tragic occasion. The community has always condemned suicide bombings, kidnappings, beheadings and the torture of innocent individuals. Its record speaks volumes on these issues.

The demonstrations in Dearborn and Detroit this past summer over the Israeli war on Lebanon are documented and recorded. They were clearly against the war and a loud and vocal message to the warring parties to stop the war and destruction. No one in his right mind would believe that 10,000 people marched in Dearborn purely in support of Hizbullah, as the DJN led people to believe. Rather, those who were demonstrating were loyal American citizens who were concerned about their loved ones who were trapped in the crossfire in Lebanon. The DJN described the demonstrations in a false, ill-intended and unsubstantiated manner. It was a clear attempt to distort the facts and smear the community, its leaders and the organizers of the marches. And perhaps to distract from the internationally-condemned irrational Israeli response to the Hizbullah capture of its soldiers.

The DJN intentionally and maliciously ignored the fact that more than 25,000 Americans were trapped in Lebanon in the massive Israeli attack according to the State Department, most of them from Michigan. Thousands of Dearborn residents were trapped in Lebanese villages on the border with Israel. People were worried and concerned and they demonstrated demanding a ceasefire and asking the government to help stop the war and evacuate their families. Innocent Lebanese Americans were injured and some were killed in the war. More than 1,200 innocent Lebanese civilians were killed, 45 percent of them children under 13 years of age. More than 90,000 residential units were either totally demolished or partially damaged. More than 140 bridges were destroyed in Lebanon, adding yet a greater hardship for more than a million Lebanese refugees who were fleeing North. Most Lebanese Americans in Dearborn are from the South of Lebanon where the damage and the casualties were the highest. That is the reason people were demonstrating. Just ask U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow or U.S. Senator Carl Levin about the thousands of calls their offices received about this issue.

"The Arab American News," AAPAC, the Congress of Arab American Organizations (CAAO) and the entire Arab American community have tremendous respect for the Governor of the State of Michigan, Jennifer Granholm, and for her opponent, Republican candidate Dick DeVos. They have very strong relationships with both candidates, have met them several times and continue to meet and discuss with them issues of concern. They thank both of them for their contributions to the community, to the State of Michigan and to the country. Most importantly, they appreciate their continued friendship. Both of them and other candidates as well are always welcome at the community's organizational functions, mosques and churches. They will never ask them or any elected officials to choose between this community and other communities. This would be plain discrimination. To the contrary, they ask our elected officials to unite and facilitate dialogue among the different communities.

The newspaper and all the above-mentioned groups have all urged community members to engage as well in constructive dialogue with the two gubernatorial candidates and to get to know them and know where they stand on the issues that affect our state, in order to make an intelligent choice in the November election. AAPAC will do its work this election season, like it has been doing since its inception - evaluating candidates and ballot issues and presenting the community with a list of candidates its members believe best serve our community, state and the country.

"The Arab American News," AAPAC, CAAO, their leaderships and the entire Arab American community respect their brothers and sisters in the Jewish community. They believe that there are more commonalities between them than there are differences. They agree and work with each other on many issues locally and nationally, especially in the civil rights arena. Unfortunately, the two communities strongly disagree - with passion - about U.S. foreign policy, in particular that toward the Israeli-Arab dispute. This community recognizes and bemoans historic Jewish sacrifices and understands the tragedy and significance of the Holocaust. Contrary to DJN's unfounded claims, they would never understate its significance. However, that does not preclude criticizing the Jewish state when it is doing something wrong. It does not preclude defending and advocating for those who are suffering mightily from Israeli policies.

The community and the leaders involved have always encouraged Arab world leaders to engage in dialogue and to work toward peace. Osama Siblani and I were present on the White House lawn on September 13, 1993, when President Bill Clinton hosted the signing of the historic Oslo Accords between Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat. That acceptance of Israel's right to exist according to international law, however, also does not preclude criticism of that state's policies when they are wrong.

It is disingenuous of the "Detroit Jewish News" to say that they respect the community's right to say what it believes, because they follow that statement with the caveat that if they say it, no one should associate with them. In the last two decades, the community has continuously invited American Jewish community leaders for a genuine dialogue on the conflict in the Middle East. But they and their newspaper seem more intent on stifling debate than on promoting it. This serves neither our country, our state, Israel nor the rest of the Middle East.

Other attacks across the country

Arab-baiting is indeed a nation-wide phenomenon. These are just a few of the recent incidents across the country. There is, for instance, the case of Bilal Dalati, a Republican candidate for Anaheim City Council in California, who has been the target of vicious attacks by former state Republican Party Chairman Shawn Steel, who supports Dalati's opponent, incumbent Bob Hernandez. Steel has called Dalati a "Manchurian candidate" and questioned his patriotism for supporting elected officials who have been critical of President George W. Bush's Iraq policies. Steel also criticized Dalati's participation at an anti-war rally this summer. That rally was attended by Christians, Jews, Muslims and people of other faiths, who demanded an immediate cease-fire to the Israeli attack on Lebanon.

In another race, 47th Congressional District incumbent Loretta Sanchez has been targeted using similar tactics. Sanchez's opponent Tan Nguyen has angered local Muslims with his offensive and inflammatory use of a photograph of a Middle Eastern terrorist to link the hot-button issues of illegal immigration and terrorism.

Of course, everyone is open to attack. First-term Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA) is campaigning to hold on to his seat in the Southeastern corner of Pennsylvania. He has attacked his challenger, Iraq veteran Patrick Murphy (D), for his "weak support of Israel." A statement from Fitzpatrick's campaign said, "Last year the Congressman traveled to Israel to see first hand the threat Israeli people face on a daily basis. He was astounded to see exactly how close Israel's enemies are from its borders and how the Israeli people live under constant threat of attacks by nations and terrorist groups." One guesses he did not bother to go to the West Bank or Gaza to "see first hand" the devastating conditions Palestinians live under or even glance North of that close border to see the total devastation of Lebanon about which everyone was protesting. Fitzpatrick goes on to say of his opponent, "Murphy's call for direct talks with Iran shows his failure to understand the Middle East situation." Perhaps nobody told the Congressman that on September 29, 19 members of Congress, including Congressmen Jim Kolbe (R-AZ), Jim Leach (R-IA), Phil English (R-PA) and eight other Republicans, sent a letter to President George W. Bush urging him to "open direct diplomatic channels with Tehran." Do they not "understand the Middle East situation" either?

One of the dirtiest campaigns launched by American Jews against Muslims was that against Maher Hathout, Chairman of the Islamic Center of Southern California and the first Muslim to receive the John Allen Buggs Award from the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission. According to Teresa Watanabe, writing in the "Los Angeles Times," the Human Relations Commission "voted to reaffirm its selection of Hathout after a bitter, two-week battle that many lamented has seriously set back the region's Muslim-Jewish relations.

"The furious fight over what has normally been a quiet award selection process was sparked when some Jewish groups charged that Hathout, a 70-year-old retired cardiologist, was a closet extremist who denounced Israel as an apartheid state and was soft on terrorism. Their opposition prompted the commission to reopen its July decision selecting Hathout. Hathout's supporters, who spanned a wide ethnic and religious spectrum, called him a pioneer in promoting moderation, tolerance and understanding. The Muslim leader, in remarks before the commission vote, offered to meet in a dialogue with critics and expressed regrets for harsh language toward Israel. But his opponents did not seem mollified. They reiterated that they fully supported his right to express his opinions, but believed he was too divisive to merit a human relaions award." Writing in the "Los Angeles Daily News," Brad A. Greenberg said “The county Commission on Human Relations on Monday affirmed a decision to honor the humanitarian efforts of a local Muslim who has promoted interfaith dialogue but also called Israel an 'apartheid state' run by 'butchers.' The commission's decision this summer to recognize Maher Hathout with the prestigious John Allen Buggs award caused a deep divide in Los Angeles religious communities, particularly between Muslims and Jews, after it was revealed that Hathout had made statements supporting Hizbullah as 'freedom fighters' and sharply criticizing Israel."

As I painted these two olive trees, I began to notice the subtle variation in their basic color. The foliage is a glow of Grey-green -- luminous like a cloud of finely textured light. It glistens with bits of blue sky reflected in the upper reaches; while the lower parts reflect the many colored soils of Palestine. The leaves of olive trees are small and tough, polished on top with a fuzzy, muted gray tone on their underside.

In Ramallah where these twins were painted, a certain brown-orange of the earth mingles with the olive-green of their foliage. In Sabastia, the ash gray soil mixes with the blue of the sky to create a cool, blue-green atmosphere. In Rafidia, the golden soil turns the olive green into a lighthearted green of spring. As your eye moves up to the center, and beyond, to the top of the tree; one is treated to breath taking transitions of color.

Few months ago a Palestinian speaker was addressing the audience when he said "Palestinians are the best nation in the world". I found that to be very racist and arrogant that I was about to lose my temper and rage at him but thanks God I controlled myself. By time I myself am accepting that statement more and more. Palestinians can't be normal human beings, otherwise they should have committed a collective suicide long time ago because any comparison between death and the current living conditions of the Palestinians will definitely tilt in favour of the former. So yes Palestinians are super heroes, but we need not to forget that even Superman himself died at the end when an alien called Doomsday came down to Earth and killed him. Palestinians are no stronger than Superman but Doomsday is an insignificant element when compared to the savage Zionist beast the Palestinians have been suffering because of for more than 58 years. The hourglass sand is already running out!

"GAZA: INEXPLICABLE WOUNDS AND NEW WEAPONS"

The investigative report ensued from the alarm that was launched in the second part of last July by some doctors of Gaza’s hospitals who had treated for the first time some inexplicable wounds that had provoked the amputation of legs in at least 62 cases. On many occasions, the doctors asked for the international community’s help in order to understand the cause of these strange wounds, which presented fragments that were little and often invisible to X-rays and unaccountable cuts that were provoked by heat within the lower limbs.

Several articles appeared in the national and international press.

After lengthy research, RaiNews24’s investigative branch has detected the plausible cause of these effects: it seems that they are related to a new weapon that is dropped by drones (unmanned fighter planes) and then precisely remote-controlled to strike against the established target.

SORRY AHMED

In the early 80's I was living in a small town in Northern Ontario. There was a university there which was attended by many foreign students. One of them was a young man from Palestine. Ahmed often came to my home to visit and we became very good friends. I remember on one occasion he related to me a childhood experience that left me feeling sick... I doubted him at first thinking that the story was exaggerated, or even fabricated, but never the less, it remained with me. He told me of walking home from school in his home town of Nablus, he and a friend. He then told me that 'out of the blue' Israeli soldiers appeared on the street and shot his little friend dead.
I did not want to believe that any civilised country would allow its soldiers to act in this manner.... I thought his 'tale' was just another from the anti Israeli propaganda machine.
After living here some twenty two years I can honestly say that there is no such machine... Israel itself produces enough reasons in one day to prove that my friend spoke the truth to me.....
