"Indeed, deception and lies represent the main defining features of the entire Israeli discourse, past and present.

Moreover, we should never ever count on America. America is a country that is enslaved and controlled by Zionist Jews. It is a country that lost its free-will a long time ago and became a mere tool in the service of Zionist bellicosity and hegemony.

We have seen how America cast one veto after the other at the UN Security Council whenever the poor Palestinians sought redress there. So, what could we possibly expect America to do in case Israel attacked us with nuclear weapons? Well, I am sure that at the very most America would call on both sides to show self-restraint. -Sorry, but for the rest of us this simply isn't good enough."

Israel's Nuclear Bombs: The Biggest Threat to World Peace

© By Khalid Amayreh, for thepeoplesvoice.org

On 12 December, 2006, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert listed Israel among the world’s nuclear powers. Olmert argued that Iran had no right to emulate nuclear powers such as Israel, the US, France and Russia, since these nuclear powers “never” threatened to attack other nations with nuclear weapons.. Carter and Divine Intervention

ok, i feel like i need to say something about Carter and his book. This whole thing has exploded into a media frenzy it seems like. But what is Carter really saying? Is he the knight in shining armor Palestinians have been waiting for?

I would say no- do not expect any divine intervention from Carter. I will admit it, i have not read the book yet- but just taking a look at his statements (below) you can see he is not totally on point with this concept of apartheid. don't get me wrong, i thank him for sharing his views with the american public- i think alternate voices such as his are badly needed in today's media. but that doesn't mean i can't disagree with him, right? right, so ok.

first thing: his idea that arabs within israel do not experience apartheid. i would venture to say that is- you've got the redlining of neighborhoods for example. arabs are treated like second class citizens- just look at how they are treated within the knessets. they are not entitiled to same rights as jews- they need permits to expand their homes- the list goes on really. you still have many in the israeli government saying that they want to throw the arabs in the sea- and not just the west bank arabs, but those within israel too. but don't take my word for it- this is what adalah has to say...MORE

WELCOME TO BETHLEHEM

Israel seems to think Apartheid is nothing but a big joke.... this is the banner they hung on the infamous wall to greet the tourists to Bethlehem this Christmas.

Let's hope and pray the wall will soon be a thing of the past....

A LAND AT PEACE OR IN PIECES?

Olmert wants peace? He sure had me fooled. He sings different tunes wherever he goes it seems... in Gaza he kills, in Bethlehem he kills, in Ramallah he kills....
He builds walls separating nation from nation.....
He refuses entry to elected officials....
The list is endless, BUT he claims to want peace...WHERE???
The song he sang in Europe gives the impression of sincerity... but we know better. He is a man of many songs.... most of which are nothing but lies.
To add to the confusion and to make him look like the 'good guy', Ynet just published the following.....
Words are cheap.... lives aren't!

PREJUDICE KEEPS US IGNORANT

I have a confession to you, my dear readers... a confession that I am almost ashamed to make. I realised very recently that I harboured feelings of prejudice. I thought of myself as an open minded person, free of hate, but this was not the case.
My view of United States politicians was so biased that I saw no good among them. My ignorance, like most, was unjustified.
This was proven to me this morning when I read the following article in HaAretz... it seems that Former President Jimmy Carter is a real 'mentch' (fine human being)....
You can read about him here.....

PALESTINE....AN EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE SITUATION

(Ben Heine © Cartoons)

The western observer, it seems, gets very little information on the real situation in Palestine today. The 'gates' are literally closed to the press and censorship is the order of the day.
There are some foreign reporters here that literally risk their lives and visas by reporting as much of the truth as possible. The team at CounterPunch certainly does a great job and must be commended for it.
The following was just submitted by Eliza Ernshire, a long time contributor to CounterPunch... it's a must read and gives an excellent account of the situation today...

Dear Santa, or Someone

By Deb Reich

Dear Santa,

I live in Israel/Palestine and I think I am probably addicted to the big bad conflict we have here. We all seem to be addicted to the conflict we have here. We are so used to it, sometimes I wonder if, given half a chance, we could really learn to live without it. Meanwhile, the academics study it. The politicians cook it and bake it and spin it. The pollsters monitor it. Nonprofit organizations and NGOs mop up the messes, frequently lethal, that it makes. Dissident poets bemoan it, and the journalists (with the exception of a courageous handful, who tell the truth) pretend to report on it. The prisoners find their education, for better or worse, in its shadow, while the wardens find some kinky pleasure there, or anyhow their paycheck.

The mothers, raped by the conflict, carry it with them like some spawn of Satan. That is how it feels, these days. We are continually and forcibly violated by the politicians’ spinmeisters, who keep trying to impregnate us with their dysfunctional fantasies so we can deliver more soldiers for the conflict…. The children are afraid of the conflict, they’re afraid that it’s lurking under the bed (if they have a bed, if they have a house), or that it’s about to fall on them from the sky and explode in a hail of blood and gore, to kill and maim, like it did last night or last week or in the last war. Or, brainwashed, they crow about the enemy’s getting what he deserves, never thinking that “the enemy” is mainly a bunch of kids like them. And then they get a bit older and go out to do battle.

Santa, tell me: What in God’s name have we done to the children?

Israel boycott may be the way to peace

Friday December 15, 2006
The Guardian

There is a fragile ceasefire in Lebanon, albeit daily violated by Israeli overflights. Meanwhile the day-to-day brutality of the Israeli army in Gaza and the West Bank continues. Ten Palestinians are killed for every Israeli death; more than 200, many of them children, have been killed since the summer. UN resolutions are flouted, human rights violated as Palestinian land is stolen, houses demolished and crops destroyed. For archbishop Desmond Tutu, as for the Jewish former ANC military commander now South African minister of security, Ronnie Kasrils, the situation of the Palestinians is worse than that of black South Africans under apartheid.

Meanwhile, western governments refer to Israel's legitimate right of self-defence, and continue to supply weaponry. The challenge of apartheid was fought better. The non-violent international response to apartheid was a campaign of boycott, divestment and UN-imposed sanctions which enabled the regime to change without bloodshed.

Today, Palestinians teachers, writers, film-makers and non-governmental organisations have called for a comparable academic and cultural boycott of Israel as offering another path to a just peace. This call has been endorsed internationally by university teachers in many European countries, by film-makers and architects, and by some brave Israeli dissidents. It is now time for others to join the campaign - as Primo Levi asked: "If not now, when?" We call on creative writers and artists to support our Palestinian and Israeli colleagues by endorsing the boycott call. Read the Palestinian call pacbi.org.

While Mike Foster is right to point out (Letters, December 9) that the Balfour declaration of 1917 did not grant Israel its right to exist; it also could not promise a Jewish national home, as he says it did, because it was not in its power to do so. The British government merely "looked with favour" on such an idea. More importantly, he omits, as many do, the subsequent words, "... it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of the existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine ...". It is impossible to say that those qualifying words have been observed.

This is the reader-participant post

Since I appreciate that people come to read this blog, (and a bit stimulated by an idea by Gianluca), I want to make the comments segment of this post part of an interactive project. I am creating a "Conflict Terminology Dictionary", with one eye on Ambrose Bierce and the other on our own talents in looking at reality, current events, the mass media and ourselves.

Topics that are allowed:

* anything Peacepalestine has written on from its inception. This includes the comments section, so you can also enjoy yourselves by bringing the comments section into the fray.

* anything having to do with the Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, militarism, Zionism, activism, the NATO, the mass media and how it treats all of these issues

What is not allowed:

* defamation. Remember, defamation is illegal and unless you can substantiate insults and smears with accurate evidence, it is not permitted in this game and will be deleted from the comments block as soon as I see it.

What will happen with this?

The best will be edited into a small compendium, just for enjoyment purposes. They may be picked up by other media outlets, so if you want to sign it, you can do that.

ALSO!!!! In the next few days, I will be revising the blogroll and outgoing links section. I will be adding many new links and eliminating a few old ones. If there is a link you think should be here, please let me know! I have a list of about 30 that I've been meaning to add, and will get to it shortly!

Palestinians need support, not division (epilogue to a smeary gatekeeping campaign) By Mary Rizzo

End of the year, it seems natural to try to sum up a few things, to try to draw up the balance sheet of what has been happening. Unfortunately, for Palestinian people and for the people of Lebanon, being on the wrong side of the Israeli stick has meant now (as much as ever) destruction, death, and suffering. Even as the world was witnessing the wanton demolition of civilian infrastructures, it seems as though Israel gets let off the hook again, as amazing as it seems to many of us. The propaganda is THAT intense that we turn a blind eye. It would have been an important opportunity for the people who consider the struggle for the extension of human rights to every person on our planet to not miss an opportunity to voice their horror for this outrageous and illegal violation of basic human rights, considering the situation that we are witnessing in Iraq; a total disaster. But, excepting isolated cases, that did not happen. There was little public outcry, and the echo of the dissent that was voiced has long since died out as Olmert gets embraced warmly by the political leaders of Europe and the Vatican. ...more

ABBAS CALLS FOR EARLY ELECTIONS

In a fiery and lengthy speech broadcast nationwide that was at sharp contrast with Haniya's more conciatory talk last night, Mahmud Abbas has called for unspecificed early presidential and parliamentary elections in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

Abbas spoke for more than 1 1/2 hours, hurling verbal insult after insult at Hamas and at unnamed figures abroad "who dont' dirty their feet on our soil", a jab at Khaled Meshal.

But througout the speech, it was not clear that Abbas would come outright and call for new elections. He merely stated in the beginning that it was his legitimate right to do. The whammy of the an announcement came as the final sentence of his speech, to which those in attendence jumped to their feet amdist thunderous applause. Outisde, Fateh supporters shot gunfire in celebration and honked their horns.

Abbas began by explaining the reasons why he believes a unity government has not been formed and why he said in a press conference with Sec. of State Rice that the road to national dialogue has been closed.

Abbas went on to talk about how the firing of rockets has hindered foreign investments in Gaza, saying "there were high hopes that the land freed of settlements would flourish with investements, but because we insist on firing rockets this has not happened"... more

Gazans speak out on early elections

Tension was palpable in the air today in Gaza, as Hamas's executive forces deployed alongside the presidential guard, hours after an attempt on Prime Minister Ismail Haniya's life. Luckily, the tension has so far not spilled over into violence in Gaza, as in the West Bank, and both forces shown admirable restraint.

Haniya proceeded to give his speech, which many people I spoke with viewed as "re-assuring" given the volatile climate of recent days and weeks. Still, many question marks remain: how will the money he was able to raise make its way into Gaza? Is a unity government still realistic? What is the alternative? ...more.

Implosion in Palestine - the Civil war has begun

I am not a fan of King Abdullah of Jordan, but I do not despise him to the level of other cyber-pundits. But his "prediction" of three civil wars in the Middle East at one time is not far off the mark, brought into sharp focus by the events in Gaza in the past 24 hours.

The latest manifestation of unacceptable violence being perpetrated by Arabs against Arabs has been seen in Gaza and Ramallah, a deepening hell-hole of tragedy, anger and explosivity. The man suspected of orchestrating the attempted assassination of Hamas leader and Palestinian PM Ismail Haniyeh is Mohammed Dahlan, the knuckle-buster of the Fatah party.

Dahlan, whose troubled employment with the Palestinian Authority, has been referred to Palestinian Chalabi, an intriguing if not sordid reference to perhaps the most hated Iraqi politician who was the neocon mascot leading up to the Iraq invasion. An article in globalsecurity.com end the article on Dahlan by saying that...more

KKK Leader David Duke, Rabbis attend Holocaust Conference in Iran

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Two rabbis are among 67 people attending a conference in Iran that organizers say will examine whether the Holocaust ever took place.

The conference was initiated by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has described the Holocaust as a "myth" and called for Israel to be wiped off the map.

Organizers tout the conference as a scholarly gathering aimed at discussing the Holocaust away from Western taboos.

Also at the conference is former Louisiana state representative and Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke and Australian Frederick Toben, who was jailed in Germany in 1999 for questioning the Holocaust.

The conference has drawn condemnation from Israel and Germany.

Arabs in Israel call for a "state of all its citizens" to replace Jewish-only policies, writes Jonathan Cook in Nazareth

The official political leadership of Israel's more than one million Palestinian citizens issued a manifesto in Nazareth last week demanding a raft of changes to end the systematic discrimination exercised against non-Jews by the state since its creation nearly six decades ago.

Included in the manifesto -- the first ever produced by the community's supreme political body, known as the High Follow-Up Committee -- are calls for Israel to be reformed from a Jewish state that privileges its Jewish majority into "a state of all its citizens" and for sweeping changes to a national system of land control designed to exclude Palestinian citizens from influence.

The document is likely to further increase tensions between the Israeli government and the country's Palestinian minority, and has already been roundly condemned in the Hebrew media. ...more

My eyes followed his finger as it moved across the landscape and stopped at the settlement of Har Gilo. "And there. See? They are going to build settlements just like those all around us." All settlements in Israel and the Occupied Territories are easy to point out - houses are obtrusively white in color, perfectly aligned next to one another, and built on a hilltop - like a perfect suburbia and another world. Palestine on the brink of civil war?

15 December 2006

Palestinians are reeling from a century of systematic destruction of their way of life at every possible level. Instead of pouring gasoline on the fire, as the US-Israel-Fatah coalition has been doing, and instead of debating the price of petrol, as the international community has busied itself with throughout the entire history of this conflict, we need to recognize that events are fast reaching the straw breaking the camel's back moment. Few seem to grasp that 'business as usual' in the Middle East can only be destined to lead to more suffering, death, and loss of hope, and that the time to act was yesterday. [MORE]

Electronic Intifada co-founder Ali Abunimah has long presented insightful analysis, monitoring and reporting on the deteriorating conditions in Palestine. In his new book, One Country, Abunimah presents his vision for a solution not based on partition rather equal rights and a dignified existence for all its citizens.

Abunimah travels often to the Middle East and is a full-time researcher in social policy at the University of Chicago. Christopher Brown spoke with Abunimah on the telephone earlier this month as he toured the United States promoting his book One Country.

Christopher Brown: Ali Abunimah, could you talk about the current situation in Gaza?

Ali Abunimah: The situation in Gaza is very similar to what it has been for many years and worsening consistently; there's a million-and-a-half people in Gaza; a permanent Israeli siege by land, sea and air under frequent bombardment; since early summer, more than [400] Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by the Israelis; several thousand injured, most of them civilians; the vast majority of people in Gaza now have difficulty feeding their families due to the Israeli siege which prevents food and other basic essentials from coming in.

In June, Israel bombed the only power plant in Gaza, so much of Gaza is without electricity on a consistent basis and is expected to remain so for the foreseeable future since no serious rebuilding is being done. It's a very severe situation where daily life is characterized by poverty, a struggle to survive and random violence, which claims many innocent lives... more

    FAQ on new elections

    Dec 16, 2006

Today, the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, gave a speech calling for new general elections with the goal of ending the international boycott of the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority government. It is disputed whether or not Abbas, as President, has the authority to call for new elections.

".... Does this mean that the boycott has been effective?

This depends on the goal of the boycott. If the objective was to impoverish a nation for exercising its democratic rights in a free and fair election – in which foreign powers disapproved of the outcome - then that goal has been achieved.

However, this is the first time in history that an occupied people have been subject to such a boycott, rather than their occupier – Israel. In addition, it is rare that a nation is boycotted expressly because the result of a fair and democratic election was deemed unfavorable by external powers."

2.2 - Who are the Palestinian refugees?

The Public Relief Committee distributes food to needy refugees in Nablus. (Rami Swidan, Maan News)
Palestinian refugees are the individuals who have been forced from their homes through deliberate Israeli actions since 1948, and their offspring. There are five primary groups of Palestinian refugees and displaced persons:

The largest group is comprised of Palestinians displaced/expelled from their homes in 1948. This includes Palestinians registered as refugees with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), created in 1948 to aid Palestinians forced from their homes, and others who either were not eligible for international assistance or chose not to receive it.

The second major group is comprised of those Palestinians displaced for the first time in the June, 1967 war from their places of origin in the West Bank, eastern Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.

The third group of refugees includes Palestinians who left the Occupied Territories since 1967 and are prevented by Israel from returning due to revocation of residency, denial of family reunification, or deportation. Some are unwilling to return there owing to a well-founded fear of persecution.

In addition, there are two groups of internally displaced Palestinians. The first includes Palestinians who left their homes or villages but remained in the area that became the state of Israel in 1948. The second group includes Palestinians internally displaced in the West Bank, eastern Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.

The Institute for Middle East Understanding provides journalists with quick access to information about Palestine and the Palestinians, as well as expert sources, both in the U.S. and the Middle East. Need story assistance? Contact us. New to the issue? See Background Briefings.

Perhaps if Trudy Rubin, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in commentary in 2001 for her columns on Israel and the Palestinians, had made reference to the actual longest running refugee crisis in the world (created by Racist Israel) and the many Palestinian refugees suffering in Iraq, by pointing out the the fact that The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has specifically appealed for governments to help Palestinians fleeing Iraq, your letter writers would have a better grasp on the situation- and the fact that the road to peace really does travel right into the heart of Jerusalem- and the Palestinian refugees inalienable Right of Return.

Real return to original homes and lands as specified by international law - not forced transfer to an Israeli made prison camp called Palestine.

    Sincerely,
    Anne Selden Annab

    Dear Editor,

It took several millennium to build the civilization and sensibilities that a modern bomb can obliterate in seconds ... when will we ALL learn that armed violence- including our own- simply is not the answer to anything.

We seriously need to be revisiting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from 1948, created at a time when the world was very torn by war and trying to heal. It contains a great deal of wisdom. It's central theme is ... "Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world"

When looking at the Middle East it is crucial to understand the fact that that foundation of peace has been seriously undermined there by our well funded "friend" and adviser Israel, the misnamed Jewish State and its misguided push to create and exasperate a "clash of civilizations". Would Saddam have become the monster that he was with out Israel's constant shenanigans ?

Before we foolishly invaded Iraq, peace and progress were already very much undermined by Jews-preferred Israel's Apartheid and the longest running refugee crisis in the world- the Palestinian refugees. In flagrant violation of international and moral law racist Israel has been pulverizing Palestinian homes and families since 1948, both inside and outside "Israel-proper".

If we want to be building a just and lasting peace and progress in the Middle East, including equal rights for women and minorities then we seriously need to be demanding that our well funded "friend" Israel fully respect the rule of fair and just laws ... and the Palestinian refugees inalienable right of return to original homes, land and dignity.

    Sincerely,
    Anne Selden Annab

    Universal Declaration of Human Rights

    (other language versions)

Adopted and proclaimed by General Assembly resolution 217 A (III) of 10 December 1948

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the full text of which appears in the following pages. Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."
    PREAMBLE

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Many people in the world don't seem to know this, but the Virgin Mary was a Palestinian. This painting makes that point, dressing her in traditional Palestinian attire.
