Introducing A Palestinian-American Democrat

Sat Apr 14, 2007 at 08:44:53 AM PDT

I am a Palestinian/Syrian American school teacher. Since I have been posting on Daily Kos, a few commentators have inferred that I am fostering hate, for to some when I speak lovingly of my heritage, it is by implication hatred of Israel.

My mother is a Roosevelt Democrat and throughout her life has exhibited unswerving loyalty to the Democratic Party. My late father was a Republican; like many Palestinians who immigrated to the United States, my father was a businessman, which is probably why he gravitated toward the Republicans.

My two previous posts on Right of Return do nothing more than advocate that Israel abide by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which clearly states "Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country." Let me quote Eleanor Roosevelt, who was instrumental in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

Uniting for the Return - Fifth Annual International Al-Awda Convention

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The Palestinians Refugees Right of Return is the primary target for liquidation by Israel, the US and Arab officialdom. Many Palestinian elites view the Right of Return as a nuisance, a hurdle blocking their quest for Palestinian statehood. As Azmi Bishara noted recently, it is the other way around: the statehood-at-any-price project espoused, explicitly and covertly, in some Palestinian circle is burdening the Palestinian refugees' quest for return.

Al-Awda's upcoming convention on May 25-27 in Riverside, California represents a space and an opportuntiy to defend the Right of Return in the US (Information below). Al-Awda has been, and will continue to be dedicated to full Palestinian return and liberation.

Uniting for the Return: Al-Awda's Fifth Annual International Convention

VENUE: University of California, Riverside, 900 University Avenue, Riverside, CA, 92521

DATE: May 25-27, 2007

Al-Awda's Fifth Annual International Convention will be held this year in Riverside, California, on the May 25-27 memorial day week-end. The theme of this year's convention is Uniting for the Return.

The date of the convention commemorates the Nakba, the 59th year since the "State of Israel" was declared on stolen Palestinian land, and which led to the Zionist occupation of all of Palestine.

This year's convention will be hosted at the University of California, Riverside, by Students for Justice in Palestine. The community-based local host committee currently also includes Al-Awda's Riverside, Los Angeles and San Diego chapters, The Palestinian American Women's Association, The Free Palestine Alliance, The National Council of Arab Americans, The Middle East Cultural and Information Center, The Muslim Students Association at Palomar College, The Muslim Students Association at UCSD, Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA, The Muslim Students Union at UCR, and The Arab Community Center of the Inland Empire.

The Program

The Fifth Annual International Al-Awda Convention promises to be an amazing three-day event from speakers and workshops, a youth program, to a Palestine Cultural Dinner Event. The opening will be held on the evening of Friday 25 May and include a moving event at which survivors of the Nakba, the great catastrophe, share their recollections of their first-hand experience in 1948.

On Saturday May 26, the convention will devote itself to political assessments, and to developing the ongoing work of organizing Al-Awda's Right of Return campaigns such as refugee support, media work, student, divestment, art/culture, etc., in addition to our recruitment and outreach projects.

On Sunday May 27, the convention will arrive at its resolutions based on the concrete recommendations of the various workshops.

The Saturday evening Palestine Cultural Dinner Event will include keynote addresses as well as Palestinian folkloric dance, music, a Palestinian Arab fashion show and readings of children's writings from refugee camps.

Among the confirmed convention speakers are:

Dr. Naseer Aruri, former member of The Palestine National Council
Elias Rashmawi, National Coordinator National Council of Arab Americans
and Samia Halaby, activist, artist and Nakba survivor

INVITATION

We invite all Al-Awda members, and groups and individuals who support the implementation of the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their towns and villages of origin, and to reclaim their land, to join us in our landmark Fifth Annual International Convention. The convention is a superlative forum for activists to listen to expert presentations and to share their own thoughts on how they would like to see our collective efforts and campaigns for the rights of Palestinian refugees develop.

Like its predecessors, Al-Awda's Fifth International Convention will be one of the largest annual gatherings of Palestinian Arab activists and their supporters. We highly encourage out of town guests to plan and make their travel and accommodation arrangements early.

RE: URI DROMI Go behind the facade of peace
http://www.miamiherald.com/851/story/72381.html

Dear Editor,

If Israel can only find meaning and identity by defining itself as demographically Jewish, it can not help but be compelled to continue to impoverish non-Jews, citizens or not. It can not help but favor immigrant bigots.... And it can not help but make more refugees, pushing countless voiceless victims into exile and despair.

60 years and counting and right now Israel, racist Israel as the Jews-preferred state, controls all borders and airspace- and most of the conversation. This situation really is insane.

Either sign the agreement Israel, and fully respect every aspect of this hugely generous offer, including full respect for the Palestinian refugees and their legal, moral, sacred Right of Return or don't. And if it is a NO on your part for what ever reason, for everyone sake, time is up and we the world should simply call that place the Israeli Republic of Palestine.

You might want to be seriously thinking of a redesign on that flag you like to fly- add some points to the central star plus three more colors; red, green and black... and end this cruel farce misnamed the 'peace process' by
giving all the people under your rule respect- equality- true democracy- real freedom & security for ALL!

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

RE: Moderate voices & Distorted coverage
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/opinion/20070412_Letters_to_the_Editor.html

Dear Editor,

Good to see the letters in response to media coverage of CAIR's Philadelphia banquet, complaining that "The article mentioned only in passing that CAIR has actively opposed all forms of terrorism. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the right-wing groups who fail to condemn Israeli transgressions".... and that Jews attended CAIR's banquet not simply as radical protesters angrily condemning the gathering from the outside, but also as invited guests breaking bread together as part of one diverse and civilized community united in their concern about the best way to mutually help encourage a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

Moderate and reasonable voices really are pushed aside by our fourth estate misrepresenting the facts and most important themes, and our own democracy's ability to function is very much imperiled when important stories are misconstrued or worse- crucial aspects are ignored.

Personally, for every one's sake ( including the rapidly shrinking Christan community in the Holy Land) I think one secular state for all is the best way forward... starting with full respect for UN Resolution 194 from 1948 clearly supporting the Palestinian refugees' legal, moral and liberating right to return. True return with true equality (plus reparations)- not more segregation, forced transfer and prison camps of escalating poverty and despair.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

Sad to see that Zionist propaganda is still so prolific in your letters columns- and so many fools are so very willing to help support racist Israeli laws and walls, failing to comprehend that thanks to the information age, all the world is realizing more and more how very wrong racist Israel has been all along.

Dear Sir,

Apologist for racist Israeli crimes, David A. Harris,
New York Executive director, American Jewish Committee, sincerely needs to understand the many ways political Zionism has been an economic crime and social crime that has very much harmed the native non-Jewish population of the Holy Land.

Why is Gaza so crowded- mainly because so many Palestinians are refugees have been long denied their inalienable right to return to original homes and ancestral lands in what is now known as "Israel -proper"... It is long overdue to begin to hold Israel to account for its own actions.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

Dear Editor,

Thrilled to see
BAHIJA RÉGHAÏ's excellent analysis " Why the Arab peace initiative should not be rejected " pop up in your pages!

Israeli rejection plus its continued harassment and ejection of many a Palestinian to create the largest longest running refugee crisis in the world today has had catastrophic ramifications for countless people worldwide.

It is crucial for everyone's sake that we the world do all we can to advocate a reasonable, sane and civilized conclusion to this cruel 'conflict' over the Holy Land. It's really about people, not land... its about basic human rights, freedom, dignity and worth VS heavily armed Israeli made apartheid and the ongoing crimes against humanity inspired and sustained by political Zionism.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

The Palestinian Right Of Return: Sacred, Legal, and Possible

A sacred right : The west was taken in by the Zionist propaganda for several decades, but what is more natural than a Palestinian returning home?

Why the Arab peace initiative should not be rejected

Commenting on the 2002 Arab peace initiative, Israeli peace activist Uri Avnery once remarked, "Every international initiative designed to put an end to the conflict passes through three stages: denial, misrepresentation, liquidation." He said that was how "both Labour and Likud governments have succeeded in scuttling every peace plan put forward." Sure enough, the Saudi initiative put forward that year was quickly liquidated -- and followed by a military buildup in the Palestinian territories.

Today, that same 2002 initiative has made a comeback, endorsed by the Arab League. It calls for Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 lines; the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and a just solution to the Palestinian refugee problem.

In return, the Arabs offer Israel a peace agreement and normal relations.

Despite the promise, Israel seems intent on yet another rejection -- not outright, but by demanding conditions that kill the spirit of the offer. So, while publicly welcoming the initiative, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert rules out a full withdrawal from the West Bank, and rejects any refugee return. "I don't think that we should accept any kind of responsibility for the creation of this [refugee] problem," he told the Jerusalem Post, in a step-back from Ehud Barak's 2000 position. Mr. Barak allowed that Israel would recognize the Palestinian right to return in principle, but would have the right to determine how many refugees would be allowed to exercise it.

First, the Arab initiative is not a menu of individual "ideas" that Mr. Olmert can pick and chose from, but a proposal for a comprehensive peace. Second, such a conference would, itself, entail broader normalization of relations with Israel, something many Arab states will confer only once Palestinian rights are achieved, not before.

The incremental process favoured by Israel in dealing with the Palestinians overlooks the asymmetry between the two sides, and puts the onus on Palestinians. What ought to be points to discuss at a negotiating table are made preconditions designed to ensure that no discussions ever take place or else requiring Palestinians to accept Israel's position. The demand that the Palestinians recognize Israel should be matched by Israel's recognition of the Palestinians' own elected government.

Israel's demand that Palestinians renounce violence ignores the continuing settlement expansion, the destruction of Palestinian infrastructure and the turning of their daily life into an Orwellian ordeal. Palestinians deserve respect, security and, above all, freedom. The absence of these is what justifies their moral claim to retaliation.

It's been said Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity, suggesting the fault for the failures of past peace initiatives lies on the Arab side. This is not true. The Rogers initiative during the Nixon years and the Reagan plan of 1982 both spoke of a Palestinian state in the territories and a freeze on Israeli settlements. Both were rejected by Israel.

Mr. Barak's offer at Camp David, from which Yasser Arafat "walked away," proposed a Palestinian state broken up by settlements, Israeli security zones and access roads. The West Bank of which Mr. Barak was said to have offered 95 per cent to the Palestinians did not include the suburbs of Jerusalem unilaterally annexed by Israel, or the security areas that would be under Israeli control for 20 years.

Indeed, a viable Palestinian state has not been what successive Israeli governments had in mind. Even Yitzhak Rabin, who signed the Oslo Accords, told the Knesset in 1995 that the permanent solution he envisioned would provide Israel with "most of the area of the Land of Israel as it was under the rule of the British Mandate, and alongside it a Palestinian entity." He explained: "We would like this to be an entity which is less than a state," and added: "We will not return to the 4 June 1967 lines." It is in Israel's own interest to find a peaceful solution that will satisfy the needs of Palestinians. To this end, Israeli leaders need to abandon the destructive and faulty narrative that all the giving is done by Israel and all the taking by Palestinians. It won't be easy, but just as de Gaulle overcame opposition within his country to end the colonization of Algeria, and South Africa's de Klerk presided over the dismantling of apartheid, Israel's leaders can rise to the moment.

Mr. Olmert can look for ways to liquidate this latest peace initiative or he can turn it into a lasting peace. Canada should encourage him to accept the opportunity.

Bahija Réghaï is president of the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations.

Al-Awda FACTSHEET
Updated September 12, 2006

The Right To Return, a Basic Right Still Denied*

Palestinian refugees represent the longest suffering and largest refugee population in the world today.

• In 2005, there were approximately 7.2 million Palestinian refugees, equivalent to 74% of the entire Palestinian population which is estimated at 9.7 million worldwide.

• The breakdown of the refugee population is as follows:

Refugee at her home - a refugee camp.
  1. During the creation of the Zionist state in 1948, approximately three quarters of a million Palestinians were forced to become refugees. Together with their descendants, more than 4.3 million of these refugees are today registered with the United Nations while over 1.7 million are not. According to The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), one-third of the registered refugees live in 59 U.N.-run camps in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, and in the West Bank and Gaza Strip sections of Palestine. The majority of the rest live in and around cities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and of neighboring countries.
  2. Approximately 32,000 Palestinians also became internally displaced in the areas occupied in 1948. Today, these refugees number approximately 355,000 persons. Despite the fact that they were issued Israeli citizenship, the Zionist state has also denied these refugees their right to return to their homes or villages.
  3. When the West Bank and Gaza Strip were occupied in 1967, the U.N. reported that approximately 200,000 Palestinians fled their homes. These 1967 refugees and their descendants today number about 834,000 persons.
  4. As a result of home demolitions, revocation of residency rights and construction of illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian owned-land, at least 57,000 Palestinians have become displaced in the occupied West Bank. This number includes 15,000 persons so far displaced by the construction of Israel's Annexation/Apartheid Wall.

The Right to Return has a solid legal basis:

  1. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 13 affirms: "Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and return to his country."
  2. The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination [Article 5 (d)(ii)], states: "State parties undertake to prohibit and to eliminate racial discrimination on all its forms and to guarantee the right of everyone, without distinction as to race, color, or national or ethnic origin, to equality before the law, notably in the enjoyment of ... the right to leave any country, including one's own, and to return to one's country."
  3. The International Convention on Civil and Political Rights [Article 12(4)], states: "No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of the right to enter his own country."

Moreover, the Principle of Self Determination guarantees, inter alia, the right of ownership and domicile in one's own country. The UN adopted this principle in 1947. In 1969 and thereafter, it was explicitly applied to the Palestinian People, including "the legality of the Peoples' struggle for Self-Determination and Liberation", (GAOR 2535 (xxiv), 2628 (xxv), 2672 (xxv), 2792 (xxvi)). International law demands that neither occupation nor sovereignty diminish the rights of ownership. When the Ottomans surrendered in 1920, Palestinian ownership of the land was maintained. The land and property of the refugees remains their own and they are entitled to return to it.

In 1948, the international community felt a deep sense of responsibility for the mass dispossession, ethnic cleansing and the Zionist transfer policy that began then. United Nations Mediator Count Folke Bernadotte, who was later assassinated by a Zionist terrorist hit squad, stated: "It would be an offence against the principles of elemental justice if these innocent victims of the conflict were denied the right to return to their homes, while Jewish immigrants flow into Palestine" (UN Doc Al 648, 1948). This remains true today as any Jew, regardless of national origin, can gain automatic citizenship while Palestinian Arabs are denied their right to return to their own homeland.

Consistent with International Law, The United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 194 on December 11, 1948. Paragraph 11 states: "the [Palestinian] refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbors should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return and for loss of or damage to property which, under principles of international law or in equity, should be made good by the Governments or authorities responsible."

• UN General Assembly Resolution 194 has been has been affirmed by the UN over 130 times since its introduction in 1948 with universal consensus except for Israel and the U.S. This resolution was further clarified by UN General Assembly Resolution 3236 which reaffirms in Subsection 2: "the inalienable right of Palestinians to return to their homes and property from which they have been displaced and uprooted, and calls for their return."

• Israel's admission to the UN was conditional on its acceptance of UN resolutions including 194. Denying the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and lands is a war crime and an act of aggression which deserves action by the international community. The international community can apply sanctions on Israel until it complies with international law.

Refugees barricaded from their home

The right of refugees to return is not only sacred and legal but also possible. Demographic studies show that 80% of Israelis live in 15 percent of the land and that the remaining 20% live on 85% of the land that belongs to the refugees. Further, of the 20%, 18% live in Palestinian cities while the remaining 2% live in kibbutzim and moshavs. By contrast, more than 6,000 refugees live per square kilometer in the Gaza Strip, while over the barbed wire their lands are practically empty. Ninety seven percent of the entire refugee population currently lives within 100 km of their homes. Fifty percent live within 40 km. While many live within sight of their homes.

• The inalienable rights of refugees are not negotiable. International law considers agreements between an occupier and the occupied to be null and void if they deprive civilians of recognized human rights including the rights to repatriation and restitution.

The US is bound by its laws not to fund regimes that violate human rights and basic freedoms. There is no more elemental right than one's right to his/her home and to live in his/her land. The US could use the leverage of the massive financial support it gives to the State of Israel to press for this right.

Privileges and Principles in Palestine/Israel

Fri Apr 13, 2007 at 09:04:52 AM PDT

" . . . a solution divorced from the context of its problem is a solution built on quicksand" (Khalidi xxiv).

Since many Palestinian-Americans find the "old country" somewhat provincial compared to our adopted homes in Europe and North America, we find it humorous when European and North American Jews, with no previous ties to historic Palestine, wax eloquently about "home" upon first stepping foot on Ben Gurion (Lod) airport soil.

In no time the "olim," (newcomers to Israel) are swapping hummus and falafel recipes, which has been appropriated as "Israeli" food. One Palestinian woman lamented recently that she had to pull out a history book to convince an American friend that falafel was an Arabic dish. In just a matter of time, the recent immigrants, or "transplants," as a Palestinian journalist refers to them, are calling one another "habbibi," Arabic for darling, and filling up comments boxes on their blogs with "yallas," and "ya annis" (other appropriated Arabic sayings).

Why Americans Should Support Right of Return for Palestinians

Mon Apr 09, 2007 at 10:19:29 AM PDT

At the Doha Debates sponsored by BBC World, eighty-two percent of the audience rejected the motion: 'This House believes the Palestinians should give up their full right of return.' Arguing against the motion were Ali Abunimeh, son of Palstinian refugees, and Ilan Pappe, Israeli historian. Abunimeh and Bassem Eid, Palestinian refugee and human rights worker, who argued in favor of the motion, continued the debate in a series of e-mail exchanges published in the UK Guardian's Comment is Free.

Abunimeh wrote to Eid,

I really hope you will join us and join the growing movement that understands that peace will only come in a decolonised Palestine where Israelis and Palestinians have equal rights regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or any other arbitrary characteristics.

Eid's points, reiterated in the Guardian story, were hardly arguments, mainly the lamentations of a man in the grips of despair. As Abunimeh commented, it was easy to see why he lost.

Fri Mar 30, 2007 at 12:53:22 PM PDT

Six Palestinian citizens of Israel, who were peacefully protesting the confiscation of their land in the Galilee were shot dead thirty-one years ago today.

Palestinians in the occupied territories, Israel, and the diaspora commemorate this day, another in a long line of commemorations significant in the one hundred year struggle against an enemy determined to possess a land without its people.

According to http://www.miftah.org/...,

Israeli authorities had announced that 5,500 acres of Palestinian-owned land would be confiscated from villages in the Galilee in what is now northern Israel. Palestinian communities inside Israel declared a general strike and took to the streets in protest where they were violently confronted by Israeli police. The area was declared a closed military zone and was later utilized for massive illegal settlement expansion in the Galilee area.

Dr. Salman Abu Sitta: Palestinians' Sacred Right of Return

Thu Mar 29, 2007 at 01:17:56 PM PDT

In 1948, the villagers of Kfar Bir'im in Galilee were evicted from their homes. Some lived in caves thinking that they could return in two weeks. Seven children died. In 1953 they watched from a hill, called today the "Wailing Hill," as Israel bombed their houses from the air. The third generation of internally displaced villagers continue their struggle to return to their land.

Kfar Bir'im is a microcosm of Palestine's tragedy. What follows is Dr. Salman Abu Sitta's story in today's Guardian. Dr. Abu Sitta is a scholar and a refugee from Ain Al Sitta in Beersheeba. He is author of the monumental Atlas of Palestine.Kfar Bir'imAtlas of Palestine
